Field Test Among the Centuries-Old Chestnut Groves of Moschiano

On August 7, 2013, in the chestnut groves of Moschiano (AV), at Mr. Angelo Mazzocca’s chestnut farm, a roundtable discussion was held, followed by a field trial in the centuries-old chestnut groves on the farm itself. The discussion addressed a highly topical issue: “The Fight Against the Chestnut Gall Wasp.”

In areas with significant hydrogeological problems, the insect is causing enormous damage to the entire sector—with estimates in the six-figure range.
Several industry representatives attended the meeting, and the following speakers also participated: Pietro Foglia, chairman of the Campania Region’s Agriculture Commission; Dr. Nicola Casciello, representing Stapa Cepica of Avellino; Franco Grasso, president of the Quindici Chestnut Growers’ Committee; Luca Bellettini, sales manager for Italy at Martignani S.r.l., and Maurizio Verderame and Alfonso di Massa from Syngenta Crop Italia.
Dr. Giampaolo Rubinaccio served as moderator.

The test was conducted using a PHANTOM B-612 pneumatic sprayer on two plots, the first treated at 600 L/ha and the second at 800 L/ha.

Observation in the dark, using UV lamps, on shoots that had been harvested beforehand with the aid of a forklift, demonstrated excellent dye coverage of leaves, branches, and burrs…and, above all, the dye coverage at 800 l/ha was deemed excessive—a sign that the machine is capable of ensuring treatment efficiency with 50–60% LESS water, considering that standard operating procedures call for water consumption of 1,200–1,500 liters.

Once again, attendees were able to appreciate the qualities of the Martignani sprayer by seeing firsthand, in real time, the results achieved in terms of water savings and reduced environmental impact.
